Accessibility

People reach this website under stress, sometimes on an old phone, sometimes with a screen reader, and often at two in the morning. It should work for all of them.

What the site aims for

This website has been built with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA as the target. That is a standard, not a certificate, and no site meets it perfectly. Where this one falls short we would like to know.

What has been done

• Semantic HTML structure, with headings in order and landmarks that screen readers can navigate.
• A skip link to the main content, and a visible keyboard focus indicator on every interactive element.
• Every function available by keyboard alone, including the menu, the accordions and the checklists.
• Text and interface colors checked for contrast against their backgrounds.
• Form fields with associated labels, clear error messages, and errors announced to assistive technology.
• Text that reflows without horizontal scrolling down to a 320 pixel viewport, and that can be enlarged.
• Animation that is reduced or removed entirely when the operating system requests reduced motion.
• No automatically playing media, no flashing content, and no time limits on reading or completing a form.

Known limitations

• Documents or images supplied by third parties may not meet the same standard. If you need something in an accessible format, ask and it will be provided.
